Steel Magnolias
Performing at Andrews Living Arts Studio (Sep 13 - Sep 29)
Runtime: 2 Hours
Synopsis
PREVIEW: Thursday, September 13th @ 8pm.
Steel Magnolias, by Robert Harling, is set in Truvy's beauty salon in Chinquapin, Louisiana, in the 1980s where all the ladies who are "anybody" come to have their hair done.
A comedy-drama play about the bond among a group of Southern women in northwest Louisiana is based on Roberts experience with his own family drama. The title suggests the "female characters are as delicate as magnolias but as tough as steel". The magnolia specifically references a magnolia tree the ladies are arguing about at the rise of the curtain.
Directed by Nikki Lucier, Steel Magnolias at Andrews Living Arts will feature some of the finest actors in the South Florida area. Annelle, a character who is not sure whether or not she is still married, is played by Cristina Flores; the outspoken, wise-cracking Truvy (JoAnn Bromley) dispenses shampoos and free advice to the town's rich curmudgeon; Ouiser (Elli Murray), an eccentric millionaire; Miss Clairee (Norita Lester), who has a raging sweet tooth; and the local social leader, M'Lynn (Lory Reyes), whose daughter, Shelby (Yanina Aranes) the prettiest girl in town, is about to marry a "good ole boy." Jamal Jean-Baptiste Stage Manages the play.
Steel Magnolias made its Broadway debut at the Lyceum Theatre, in 2005, but originated off-Broadway at the WPA Theatre in 1987.
