Russian-born pianist Kirill Gerstein is one of today’s most intriguing young musicians. His masterful technique, musical curiosity, and probing interpretations have led to explorations of classical music and jazz. He keeps a busy performance schedule at many of the world’s major music centers and festivals. Gerstein has performed with the Los Angeles, San Francisco, Cleveland, Philadelphia, Boston. Vancouver orchestras and more. In January 2010 Gerstein was named recipient of the prestigious Gilmore Artist Award, only the sixth artist to have been so honored.

SUNDAY AFTERNOONS OF MUSIC
As part of a cultural weekend in October 1980, Doreen Marx presented a free concert with a string quartet composed of the “first chairs” from the Florida Philharmonic Orchestra. This was so successful that another concert was given in the spring of 1981. The success of this ground breaking performance demonstrated the popular demand for affordable classical music concerts in South Miami. Prior to the 1980’s Miami-Dade County offered few reasonably priced cultural programs of this quality.
In the series third year, three concerts were presented with local artists. To provide subscribers with something special Doreen initiated an Artists Reception Supper following each performance. In addition, the entire audience was offered complimentary wine and soft drinks at intermission. From these small and simple beginnings, the Sunday Afternoons of Music concert series took shape, and is now recognized as one of the leading recital series in the nation .
Serious music lovers are attracted to the series because of the talent of the nationally and internationally acclaimed artists. Each year the audiences have increased due to the high caliber of artists and reasonable ticket prices. During the first twenty one years the Temple Beth Am Sanctuary provided intimate and warm surroundings, free parking and ease of access. Now in its present location and home at Gusman Concert Hall University of Miami, Coral Gables Campus the series enjoys excellent acoustics as well as greater seating capacity.
Some of the nationally and internationally acclaimed artists who have appeared during the past thirty years: Violinsts - Aaron Rosand, Vadim Repin, Peter Zazofsky, Jaime Laredo, Dmitry Sitkovetsky; Pianists - Bella Davidovich, Richard Goode, Grigory Sokolov; Cellists – Sharon Robinson, Janos Starker, Leslie Parnas, William DeRosa; Quartets: - Muir, Mendelssohn, Orion, St. Lawrence, Juilliard and The Miami String; Vocalists: Eglise Gutierrez, Elizabeth Caballero, Veronica Villarroel, Benita Valente, Dawn Upshaw, Sherrill Milnes, Marcello Giordani, Ben Heppner.
