Monday Mishegos With Mom The Yiddish Shakespeares

Programs will be in English with a bisl Yiddish 

Enjoy a  casual evening of Yiddish culture with Avi Hoffman and Professor Miriam Hoffman. The  first session will explore The Yiddish Shapkespeares, those wonder poets and playwrights of the Yiddish stage and the second will discuss Yinglish.


Avi Hoffman is a favorite of South Florida audiences for his award winning PBS one man shows Too Jewish, Too Jewish, Too! and Still Jewish After All These Years (Performer of the Year ‘95 - NY Press Magazine; L.A. OVATION award - Best Actor In a Musical 2001; NY Drama Desk and Outer Critics Circle award nominations). On TV, he was featured as Sid Raskin in the Starz TV series Magic City, as well as on Net ix’ Bloodline, A&E’s The Glades and on the NBC series Law and Order. He starred in the motion picture – The Imported Bridegroom and was seen in the PBS documentary They Came For Good: A History of the Jews in the US. His recent performance in Broken Snow at JCAT was received with critical acclaim. 


Miriam retired recently from the Germanic Languages Department at Columbia University, where  and is a renowned scholar of Yiddish. She is best known for her weekly column in New York’s Yiddish Forward. Her translation of Neil Simon’s The Sunshine Boys, into Yiddish, earned her an Emmy Award. As a child in the D.P. Camp in Ulm, Germany, she collected some eighty songs in four languages — Yiddish, Hebrew, Russian, and Polish. The album ( lled with her transcriptions) is now housed at the Holocaust Museum in Washington, D.C. She has compiled three university-level textbooks for the study of Yiddish.
