Dorrance Dance

Fri. & Sat., January 19 & 20, 2018 @ 8PM
Dorrance Dance aims to honor tap dance’s unique history in a new context by upholding the traditional form while pushing its rhythmic, technical, and conceptual boundaries. The company is passionately committed to expanding the audience of tap dance, America’s long-standing indigenous jazz vernacular. By incorporating other forms that have shaped the foundation of American culture – such as street, club & experimental dance – Dorrance Dance highlights the traditional elements of tap dance & its musical rhythms in a contemporary light.

Founded in 2011 by Artistic Director and 2015 MacArthur Fellow, Michelle Dorrance, the company’s inaugural performance garnered a Bessie Award for “blasting open our notions of tap.” In the following years, the company has received countless accolades, rave reviews, and performed for packed houses at venues including Jacob’s Pillow, The Joyce Theater, The Kennedy Center, New York City Center, Lincoln Center Out of Doors, Vail International Dance Festival, National Arts Centre of Canada, Spoleto Festival USA, Fira Tarega (Spain), Staatstheater Darmstadt (Germany), and more.

BalletBoyz

BalletBoyz is the brainchild of Michael Nunn and Billy Trevitt who founded the company in 2001. Michael and Billy met at the Royal Ballet Upper School and joined the Royal Ballet together in 1987. During their twelve years at The Royal Ballet between them they danced all the Principal roles. In 2000 they co-founded BalletBoyz. They danced all over the world for ten years and won numerous awards and accolades working with leading dancers, choreographers and designers. 2010 saw their retirement from the stage and the first edition of the groundbreaking project the TALENT. Michael and Billy selected eight young male dancers from a variety of backgrounds and worked with them closely, mentoring and coaching to create a company of first-class performers. Now in its fifth year, the Company has expanded to ten dancers and regularly tours the UK and internationally. In 2013 BalletBoyz won the National Dance Award for Best Independent Company.

PILOBOLUSShadowland

Fri. & Sat., February 16 & 17, 2018 @ 8PM
Created by Pilobolus’s dancers and directors in collaboration with lead writer for the popular animated series SpongeBob SquarePants, Steven Banks, Shadowland is a universal and intimately portrayed experience that is both intensely dramatic and comedic. The story is a surreal experience of a young girl’s sensational world as she comes of age. As the first theatrical event of its kind to tour the globe, Shadowland incorporates multiple moving screens of different sizes and shapes to create an evening-length performance that merges projected images and front-of-screen choreography.

Set to a rhythmic original score by David Poe, the popular American musician, producer, and film composer, the poetic work for Shadowland ranges from ballads to hard-driving rock numbers that lift the audience out of its seats. The songs illuminate the themes and visuals of this fascinating story and world.
